Survey Says: A Model-driven Culture is Crucial for Data Science Success

At Domino, we’re fortunate to be able to work with the leaders of the world’s largest data science organizations. One thing that’s really stood out is that even the most sophisticated organizations struggle to understand and manage the depth and breadth of their data science investments. This situation gets even worse when you expand “data science” to include the broader big data, BI, and analytics capabilities that organizations are investing in. The complexity stems from the explosion in new tools, capabilities, and processes over the last five years, and many CIOs and CDAOs don’t actually know which systems are driving which business processes, and which teams are getting stuck vs. delivering value.

Data Scientist: Still the “Sexiest Job of the 21st Century”?

Back in 2012, Harvard Business Review declared: “Data Scientist: The Sexiest Job of the 21st Century.” Authors Thomas Davenport and D.J. Patil (now the U.S. Chief Data Scientist at The White House) devoted much of their article to defining what a data scientist does. Back then, large enterprises were just waking up to the importance that data science could have in unlocking the power of data. As a relatively new discipline, they noted that the demand for data scientists far exceeded its supply, and “the shortage of data scientists is becoming a serious constraint in some sectors.”

Why Kubernetes is Great for Data Science Workloads

Kubernetes is an open-source container orchestration system that is quickly becoming essential to IT departments as they move towards containerized applications and microservices. As powerful as Kubernetes is with general IT workloads, Kubernetes also offers unique advantages to support bursty data science workloads. With the help of containers, data scientists can make their modeling portable and reproducible, and massively scale these same, containerized machine learning models.
